Description

The nose conjures spiced honey mead in a musty old barrel, what with its heavy, creamy sweet cereals and spice blend enmeshed in a certain earthiness. In contrast to that, the flavor is on the dry side, quite woody and tannin-heavy, with only a moderate malty sweetness to round it out, this seasoned with vanilla and ginger. The finish is just as dry and gingery, with a long, lingering warmth. The Auchentoshan 12 Year Old replaced the distillery’s 10 Year Old expression as their entry-level single malt. Bottled at 40% abv, the whisky has a deep, off-color gold appearance. Another way to look at it would be as a bright, well-polished bronze coloring. Palate - Fast, sweet arrival with fruitful tannins and a dry fruity complexity. Something citrus'y in here as well. For many years Auchentoshan billed itself as the only triple distilled single malt Scotch whisky. The distillation technique is commonly publicised, especially by Irish distillers, as a method which results in a narrower selection of cut spirit and an eventual lighter make – ergo a ‘smoother’ final whisky. But, Auchentoshan have been far from the only Scotch whisky to produce triple distilled spirit – Benrinnes and Springbank (via Hazelburn which was first introduced in 2005) have both used partial triple distillation, and latterly, Benriach, Benromach and Bruichladdich and have all produced small batch whiskies using the technique.

a b "Auchentoshan profile". WhiskyClassifieds.com. Archived from the original on 8 March 2009 . Retrieved 24 December 2008. Nose is lemon citrous, honey, light fresh white oak, toasted almonds, some light spice, pepper and ginger. light barley. Also some crystallised stem ginger. Nice aroma of malt, savory spices, fruit, butterscotch, overripe citrus and a general oily earthiness. It’s not super complex, but it has a nice weight to it that makes it come across as bold. Anyway, reading between the lines, you might get the feeling I’m not particularly enamoured by Auchentoshan. And you would be right. This is a distillery that hasn’t yet won me over. The triple distillation is interesting, but I struggle to find other hooks. And yet, it’s a hugely successful brand that’s in the Top 20 best-selling Scotch single malts in the world. There is an audience for their lighter, accessible style. I’m just not sure if I am part of that audience. On the palate, more dark fruits, Christmas cake and baked apples (some cherries as well). More vanilla and toffee. Spicy, with pepper and ginger. Smoother with water. Also very nice - and straightforward. Finish: Quite long and satisfying, the toffee and fudge remain and I get a lingering feeling of warmth and all being right in the world. [4] [8] The original distillery was built by a corn merchant named John Bulloch and managed with his son. [4] Following their bankruptcy in 1834, the distillery was sold to Alexander Filshie, a local farmer and it remained under control of his family until 1877, following a bad harvest when it was sold again to several owners. [4] In 1877, the distillery was acquired by the Glasgow distillers John & George MacLachlan. [4] The area around the distillery was damaged during the Second World War and a bomb crater behind the distillery now acts as a pond for cooling water. [4] The distillery was bought by Eadie Cairns in 1969, who rebuilt it completely. [8] Cairns sold Auchentoshan to whisky blenders Stanley P Morrison (later to become Morrison Bowmore distillers) in 1984. [8] [4] Suntory invested in Morrison Bowmore in 1989 and in 1994, they acquired 100% of its holdings. [4] In May 2014, [9] Beam Inc. and Suntory Holdings Limited merged to create Beam Suntory Inc, who are now the owners of Auchentoshan and other Morrison Bowmore holdings.

Special bottlings are released periodically, including the oldest, a 50-year-old Auchentoshan distilled in 1957 and released in 2008. [12] While the Classic is the more entry-level Auchentoshan, it is not one you can get here in Ontario. So the 12 Year Old is much more ubiquitous here. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect.Auchentoshan distillery ( / ˌ ɒ x ən ˈ t ɒ ʃ ən/ OKH-ən- TOSH-ən) is a single malt whisky distillery in the west of Scotland. [4] :15 Nose: Toffee, fudge with orange elbowing its way between them. A very full flavoured aroma that I could sniff for ages.

Similar to the nose the palate comes across oily and filled with notes of malt, overripe fruit, savory spice, butterscotch and brown butter along with a touch of vanilla and that same general oily earthiness. Auchentoshan 12 Years is the entry malt for the Auchentoshan distillery which is one of only 3 remaining Lowlands distilleries after the whisky market crash that caused a rash of distillery closures in 1983. Like many of the now defunct Lowlands distilleries, Auchentoshan practices a triple distillation which is a fairly common practice in Ireland, but much less so in Scotland where the majority of distilleries practice a 2x distillation. We may, but are not under any obligation, to release new functionalities and tools or other features for the Service every now and then. Sometimes referred to as “Glasgow’s malt whisky” because of the distillery’s proximity to that city, Auchentoshan is one of the six distilleries comprising the Lowland region. The sweet and delicate signature of the spirit coming off Auchentoshan’s stills has also led some to call it “the breakfast whisky,” and that particular flavor likely stems from one of the more idiosyncratic practices of the distillery: Auchentoshan is one of the few distilleries in Scotland employing triple distillation, by and large an Irish practice. The distillery has a visitor centre and conference facilities, both completed in 2005, and is open to the public for tours every day of the week.
