Backpacking Light community posts are moderated and here to foster helpful and positive discussions about lightweight backpacking. Backpacking Light helps hikers and other backcountry enthusiasts overcome their barriers to living a life outside in Wild Places. The forest sang with the sound of countless raindrops crashing through the conifer canopy, pelting the duff below as the skies roared above. It’s not the least-breathable jacket I’ve ever worn, but it’s still a waterproof rain jacket, so you’re going to sweat. Heretofore I've used the disposable ponchos as a combo rain poncho for me and pack cover in the rain.

It wasn’t until the wind suddenly stopped that I knew I was about to be rained on, so I dropped my pack and put on the Frogg Toggs Ultra-Lite2 Jacket. Featuring side snaps for extra protection, our poncho folds up and fits in an included pouch for easy storage. I make sure my pack has a cover and all my pack contents are in drysacks so I've never had a problem with gear getting wet.uilt-protectorI can't find the poncho mod for an UQP at their site this morning, only the DriDicks poncho. However after walking the VdlP I decided to lighten my pack and my poncho was one of the things to go.

I bought it to use on rainy walks around town, but here's what it looks like with my 36 liter backpack under it. I was a little apprehensive about renting a sleeping bag (could be gross inside; you never know) but it was clean and had a distinctly neutral and inoffensive smell, which was far better than my own body's condition after the end of a whole day's hike. Hiking uphill in bad weather requires constant checks and balances in dealing with exterior moisture and interior ventilation. We are not experienced campers so we appreciated that the tent came with instructions printed on the bag label. you get a pattern you can adjust to your preferences : overall length (can shelter a Macabi skirt ) sleeves.

I once had a Ferrino Trekker, but it has a metallic lining inside and just putting it on made me start to sweat. The main problem for her was that sometimes there would be a non-trivial puddle of water that had collected in the pack cover part of the poncho. I, personally do not recommend a poncho simply because it is not ideal in all weather conditions, especially in windy conditions because ponchos are terrible in windy conditions.

It won’t fit in any pocket well, even a cargo-shorts pocket unless you remove it from the pouch and roll it up. They gave us tons of guidance ahead of time figuring out what we needed and sent us videos explaining how to use equipment (JetBoil, Sawyer). I was wearing my usual summer hikers that breathe marvelously (LaSportiva Wildcats), as you would expect water literally just flushed through them on trails that resembled small streams. To me the protection of you backpack with something that is impermeable is much more important than your personal protection from rain.Recently as the natural waterproofing qualities thin out, I also dab on a full rubberised waterproofer (that you'd use to re-seal a tent groundsheet) to key areas like the cuffs and zip shield. Someone explained that the metallic lining is to prevent hypothermia, so it may be a fine winter poncho, but not for me and the camino. The mattress pads do require inflating and they are very smooth - our campsite was bit totally flat, so we all slid off our mats the first night. My German camiga swears by her Vaude poncho, which is plenty big and long and works, though it is a lot heavier than mine. I know people use the Ikea poncho on the Camino, but the design really isn't optimal, especially if you want to use poles.
