Undaunted: Stalingrad gives you the chance to recreate this epic struggle. Can you succeed and change the course of history?

Yeah, the tiles are dark and moody. It can be difficult to visually identify key places of interest as everything is brown and gray. But precious buildings are shelled and defaced over the course of the campaign. They actually degrade mechanically as cover is whittled away and tiles swapped for ones that display the scars. The first time I demolished a building and then later found myself having to defend the smoking rubble – I was battered. I forfeited one scenario five minutes in. It was a decisive moment and the affective connection between myself and the game was absolute. The consequences of the previous combat are then resolved. Depending on casualties taken up to 3 randomly-selected soldier cards will be removed. These are permamently removed from the campaign but do NOT rip them up! This is not a classic Legacy game but one that can be reset for further play. The cards have individual (fictitious) soldier names and these combatants are now gone. They are replaced, however, by Reserves. These new blood have their own identities but will have lesser abilities. One of those clever turns, and the second impressive achievement of the campaign system, is the personality imbued in the setting. I’m not talking about the moderate quantity of script that precedes each scenario and offers context to the battles. That stuff is adequate military fiction that doesn’t quite standout. What I’m talking about is in how the mechanisms afford a charisma to the city of Stalingrad. Buy New Releases Box »Each of the 2 players has separate RPG style scenario booklets which give briefings on the battle before them dependent on the outcome of the previous battles. These develop over the course of 15 branching scenarios Senior Games Developer Filip Hartelius added, “Undaunted: Stalingrad takes the series to its breathtaking next level. With every scenario played, your actions impact the course of the campaign, the platoon of soldiers you lead, and the very city itself. Brought to life by Roland MacDonald’s beautiful illustrations and Robbie MacNiven’s evocative writing, Undaunted: Stalingrad immerses you in this infamous battleground like never before. This is something else.” Stalingrad, 1942. Before you awaits a gruelling conflict in this cornerstone battleground. As the bullets and bombs tear the city asunder, only through wits and valour can you seize the cornerstone of the entire Eastern Front and change the course of history. Seconda Guerra Mondiale, fronte russo, Stalingrado.

Undaunted: Stalingrad is a powerful experience. It takes Trevor Benjamin and David Thompson’s acclaimed system and marries it to a campaign format that is engrossing and transcendent. The battle of Stalingrad is captured with such purpose and intimacy that I felt as if I was wandering through an HBO miniseries immersed in dramatic action. It’s here where the quality of the scene-setting briefings by Robbie MacNiven prove their worth as you get drawn into the lives of Max and Uri and their squads as their struggle evolves. The early missions introduce new units and actions and I found myself pushing on to see what comes next. After a couple of successful scenarios for the Germans, the Soviets brought up artillery that absolutely obliterated both Pavlov’s house and Zabolotny’s House, the two so-called “lighthouses”, reducing them to piles of rubble yet still the Germans clung on. So then the German Engineers arrive to attempt the destruction of the NKVD HQ in the Waterworks and on it goes until a final climactic battle that decides their fate and that of Stalingrad itself. To The Last Man And Bullet Unlike other Legacy games, Undaunted: Stalingrad can be completely reset to the start allowing you to replay the campaign exploring its’ other branches. While giving Stalingrad a distinct ‘next-level’ feel, this is entirely in keeping with the weight and grit of its setting. After all, the real battle stretched over months during a gruelling winter and saw the city reduced largely to rubble by the German onslaught; a tragedy that the Soviets turned to their advantage, as the shattered husks of buildings provided the ideal battleground in which to resist and pin down their overconfident invaders. That said, it’s hard not to lament the permanent destruction of your strongholds during a battle. Even if you don’t ultimately lose the territory, it will never again provide the same degree of protection from the enemy snipers. Undaunted: Stalingrad is played in a number of scenarios, 15 in the full campaign, played over a section of the 72 tile depiction of an area South of Central Stalingrad around the 9 th January Square. There are many ways the campaign can go before culminating in one of 14 endings.

Conclusione

Alternatively, two of the combatants on each side are Upgraded to give them new abilities gained through their battle experience. This is also a very easy campaign to navigate. Everything is laid out nicely and steps both before and after a mission are easy to complete. The only daunting moment is adding all the tokens to the board as shown by the map book. But with players each focusing on their own side, it doesn’t take very long. The rulebook lays out combat and new tokens nicely, and each action is easy to refer to if you find you need to relearn anything.

Stalingrad, 1942 was a pivotal battle in WWII. For over five months the German forces tried to oust the Soviet Red Army in bitter fighting before finally capitulating after being cut off and surrounded. These soldiers are grouped by class into a combat unit that takes actions on the tiles of the playing area. Thus the 5 Riflemen are represented by the Rifleman combat counter. There are 3 soldiers in the Machine Gunners unit and the Scouts. When support units arrive such as Snipers and Engineers they will also have 3 members. These units are grouped into two identical squads: A and B. These are the same for both the Germans and the Soviets. (This seems to be more for play balance than historical accuracy). With Undaunted: Stalingrad, the designers have moved the action to Eastern Front, but this isn’t just a reskin. It’s a whole new game with a novel, dedicated campaign system. What’s in the Box una gestione del mazzo intelligente, per cui è il giocatore a decidere cosa rischiare e cosa no, dove intensificare gli sforzi e dove no, quale strategia spingere e quale tralasciare; I’ve read that Stalingrad changes a couple of mechanisms from earlier games in the series. The routing of units felt natural to me and made me constantly mindful of my unit numbers. The rules to how units spawn to the board is also updated in this iteration of Undaunted. Rather than set locations, units enter the board based on rifleman locations. Riflemen become important as they are also the unit that can control mission points and push to victory in several mission types. The battle for Stalingrad features conflict over key positions as battles shift all over the city. There’s a lot more to learn about within, but I don’t want to spoil this campaign. There are many actions to discover, new units to explore, and the campaign continually introduces new elements for you to learn. This campaign also allows players to reset it once finished, as it is not a legacy game. This allows for unlimited plays through the campaign and exploration of its many branching narratives and endings. Riflemen A out here trying to hold down mission points while tanks slowly approach. Game Experience: You’re one of the few people who I don’t think would be dissuaded by the LONG but now coherent rulebook so I think I can recommend. A heavy burden rests on your shoulders. Every casualty suffered in battle will weaken your forces for the entire campaign. Every bomb blast and mortar shell leaves the very ground for which you are fighting in further ruin. Every inch lost to the enemy brings you closer to the jaws of defeat. Over the course of up to fifteen branching scenarios, you will decide the fate of Stalingrad and, perhaps, the war itself. Even though the consequences of your actions will persist, the game itself can be fully reset and replayed, allowing you to explore every potential outcome.
