About this deal

Make you tear up (if your heart is a tissue like mine 👀) and even maybe, open your eyes to the things you have been blinded from before. You had to blend in, and Usagi wasn’t sure how well he could blend in with a group of seemingly delinquent turtle teens. And the resolution of that arc felt realistic as well - I wanted Mrs Edwards to wake up and suddenly realise how great Chantelle was, but that crusty old lady would never manage that. We build and maintain all our own systems, but we don’t charge for access, sell user information, or run ads.

Author Danielle Jawando has written a novel which gives you this opportunity through the eyes of those most intimately involved when a teenage boy is fatally stabbed for no discernible reason. This threesome of new friendship in Manchester all faced different inequalities whether that was walking down the street, just being in class or trying to live in the care system. No one helped him and it really made me think about the reasons why and if someone did stop, the type of person that they might be.I listened to the audiobook version, which meant it took me some time to acclimate to the accents but it was worth it. Chantelle, Marc and Jackson are all forced to endure racist comments, microaggressions and discriminatory behaviour from their teachers, their classmates and more, all while the media continues to publish biased and sensationalised headlines about Shaq ’ s stabbing, and his grieving community continues to be unfairly and unnecessarily targeted by the police. Jackson, another young guy, who's been afforded many opportunities by the aspirations and wealth of his parents, cushioned from the reality of prejudice to an extent until he finds himself at the scene of the stabbing.

Because there’s just so many elements to it and squeezing it into a book that had two other characters to worry about didn’t quite work. Having grown up in the area the novel is set, and attended the sister college, of the college our protagonists were aspiring to, these personal connections only enhanced the reading experience for me. This was so immersive and engaging - I was desperate to learn the fate of the three main characters. The second YA novel from multi-award-winning Danielle Jawando, perfect for fans of Angie Thomas, Gayle Foreman, Jennifer Niven and Nikesh Shukla.Alabanza’s None of the Above and Jawando’s When Our Worlds Collided were announced as winners at a ceremony in London on Thursday. If these turtles really were trying to stop Draxum from saving the yokai, then Usagi needed to stop them. The book began in a way that I found a little jarring, with our introduction to year 11 student Jackson who is out in Manchester on a date with the girl he's fancied for ages. So yeah I think an entirely separate book dedicated to the unfairness of the justice system would have been a better choice. I had these various themes floating around for a while, but I think it all came together when I read this heart-breaking news story about a young boy who had been stabbed and had been asking for help.

Her latest novel isn’t perfect – it feels a bit overly long in the middle with a lull that leads to a bit of narrative unevenness and a quick, rushed final few chapters – but it is a book that everyone should read, young adults and adults alike.Alabanza said that the shortlisting had already “brought so many new readers” which they were “not expecting”. We understand that not everyone can donate right now, but if you can afford to contribute, we promise it will be put to good use. It is especially hard to read this without getting upset because you know that these interactions happen to people every day in real life. This books needs to be in schools but not only to be read by the students, but by the teachers aswell.

Set in Manchester, the novel revolves around the lives of three teenagers who begin a friendship after being witnesses to the murder of a 14 year old boy on the streets of the city they live in. Until the day when another boy is stabbed and these three are the only people who stop to offer help these young people do not know one another. When three Black teenagers in Manchester find themselves the only helpers after a violent crime in brings them together in ways they didn't expect.
