Matthew has been creating drawing and painting tutorials since the relaunch in 2020. Through his involvement with artincontext.org, he has been able to deepen his knowledge of various painting mediums. For example, watercolor techniques, calligraphy and lately digital drawing, which is becoming more and more popular. There are two methods for sharpening: move the pencil, or move the Hovel. Anything else will put your fingers in danger and likely lead to a sudden and catastrophic inability to count to 10. The Hovel has an optional wooden base that makes stationary sharpening much easier and makes your office feel like a miniature wood shop. What It Produces Popular among most artists because they catch the shavings neatly in one place and it is more difficult to hold the pencil at an incorrect angle with these sharpeners. By their nature, they tend to be larger, more unwieldy, and better suited to static applications. There are some smaller, more portable options, but I find it best to relegate them to home, office, or shop use. What It Produces

The fine, sharp point on the left is suitable for drawing, the normal point on the right (shown as being slightly blunt) is for writing. The humble pencil. It doesn’t look like much, does it? Yet there are three important lessons we can learn from it.These are extremely popular as they take the 'human error' element out of sharpening your pencils.Battery operated sharpeners like the Derwent one pictured often sharpento different points and different pencil sizes. Make sure to hold the sharpener over a garbage can. Some manual pencil sharpeners do have a covering, which prevents the shavings from falling everywhere. If the blade is not sharp enough, it will only be a frustrating process, and the pencil might even break if you are too heavy-handed with it. Any decent and sharp blade is suitable for knife sharpening a pencil. Even here in the UK with our much stricter knife laws, I can carry a diminutive Spyderco Bug and sharpen pencils to my heart’s content. The Handheld Sharpener Sometimes, there are hard pencils to sharpen and other types of pencils that require a different approach to sharpening. To get the correct shape and long tip needed for drawing, you need to use a knife or blade to get the job done.

There once was a pencil maker who said to a pencil “There are some things you need to know before I send you out into the world, always remember these things and you’ll become the best pencil you can be!” Needlepoint: Using the knife to create a concave point, which is a fine point that tends to break easily. However, it is ideal for creating fine details. How to sharpen a pencil without a sharpener? Many artists would say that this is an essential skill. You can produce nice long pencil points, which can be used for a variety of drawing purposes. You can achieve this utilizing a knife, or blade, or you can even try using sandpaper. An ordinary sharpener is okay for writing, but it is not quite the best for drawing as you want more of the graphite exposed to give you long tips. To begin, always hold the knife away from you, and if you think you might get something in your eye, you can always put on a pair of protective glasses. Begin sharpening lower down, about an inch from the top of the pencil. Grip the knife so it is approximately 90 degrees to the pencil, the blade should almost be level with the wood surface. If you decide to use a craft knife to sharpen your pencils hold them in your non writing hand and at a shallow angle stroke the blade along the wood away from you (for safety get a Derwent sharpening stand). To start with you are shaving the wood away from the inner strip and then once it is exposed you can sharpen little bits off of the strip until it is to the point you want. This technique requires a little practice so try it on a more disposable pencil before trying it on your best pencils. These desk sharpeners, whether you manually use a lever or if it is electronic, both contain two rotary blades. These blades rotate on their own axis and also move around the pencil. Simply place the pencil into the hole, and the electric sharpener will make quite a loud noise while it slices off tiny curls of wood and graphite. The mechanical sharpener, which is moved by the user, will not be as noisy. Once you remove the pencil, you can wipe the pencil point off with a dry cloth. Before you use the pencil, it must be cleaned. You can do this by using it on some paper, where you can rub and test it out. You can also clean the blade with a paper towel and do not forget to also clean your work area. Once done, store the pencil in a safe place, making sure it is upright. And of course, do not drop the pencil. If you’re wondering how to sharpen a pencil with a knife, you start by exposing the lead, and you do this lower down the pencil than you would think — around an inch should work well. Some pencils have an integrated sharpener, such as the Graf von Faber-Castell Perfect Pencil range, which conceals a sharpener within the pencil extender section. What people mean when they say that it’s what’s inside that matters the most, is that it’s our personality, our character, our values that are important, more important than how we look or dress. And this is true. To a point. Because of course there’s a dichotomy here, as how we look and dress often is important. If I strolled around school in a pair of flip flops and shorts, you probably wouldn’t be too impressed but if you met me this weekend wearing the same flip flops and shorts you wouldn’t bat an eye lid.

You can also try using a brush around the cutter on an electric sharpener after you have removed the container and discarded the shavings. In each case, if you have dull blades, you need to replace them.Unexpected and mysterious. This esoteric option sharpens pencils in a way that is unique but oddly familiar. A novel twist on normality. Who Uses It? Novel sharpening devices like the Hovel are typically reserved for those who enjoy the craft of sharpening pencils. Who find a little zen in the hypnotic and rhythmic dance of blade and pencil, wood and graphite. It’s slower than most of the other options, and more expensive to boot. What it offers is the allure of the unusual, and the focus of the deliberate. How It’s Done A good handheld sharpener to own is the Staedtler Metal Double Hole Pencil Sharpener. It has sharp blades and performs well; when the blades become duller, you can replace them to keep the sharpener performing at its best. You might be reading this and thinking, ‘surely there’s only one way to sharpen a pencil?’ — in which case, prepare for your eyes to be opened to a whole new world!
