Folklorist Edwin Sidney Hartland’s The Science of Fairy Tales (1891) explores fairy mythology, claiming it had deep significance for understanding the cultural evolution of mankind. Similarly, Oxford Professor John Rhys wrote the two volume Celtic Folklore, Welsh and Manx (1901), exploring fairy-lore. For this he travelled around the Welsh countryside asking peasants if they believed in the fay folk. Civil servant and folklorist George Laurence Gomme in Ethnology of Folkl ore (1892) had even suggested that fairy-lore was the memory of Britain’s ancient aboriginal races clashing with invaders. For him fairylore could open-up understanding into unrecorded ancient history. Some Victorians took their fairies extremely seriously!

Interest in the Cottingley Fairies gradually declined after 1921. Both girls married and lived abroad for a time after they grew up, and yet the photographs continued to hold the public imagination. In 1966 a reporter from the Daily Express newspaper traced Elsie, who had by then returned to the United Kingdom. Elsie left open the possibility that she believed she had photographed her thoughts, and the media once again became interested in the story. He again brought cameras and photographic plates for Frances and Elsie, but was accompanied by the occultist Geoffrey Hodson. Although neither of the girls claimed to see any fairies, and there were no more photographs, "on the contrary, he [Hodson] saw them [fairies] everywhere" and wrote voluminous notes on his observations. [26] The Palace were expecting a hatchet job, but the sheer maliciousness of the claims in Omid Scobie's book has left them all reeling, writes REBECCA ENGLISH

Alan Carr, 47, cosies up to his hairdresser boyfriend Callum Heslop, 27, as they head out to grab a coffee in Santa MonicaThe story of The Cottingley Fairies is one of the greatest fairy hoaxes of all time. The series of five photographs taken by two young girls caught the attention of a post-WWI nation. It wasn’t until 1983 when the two girls publically admitted that the photographs were fake.

By now Elsie and Frances were tired of the whole fairy business. Years later Elsie looked at a photograph of herself and Frances taken with Hodson and said: "Look at that, fed up with fairies." Both Elsie and Frances later admitted that they "played along" with Hodson "out of mischief", [29] and that they considered him "a fake". [26] Later investigations [ edit ] Moving into the 20th Century, fairies showed few signs of buzzing off – if anything, they cemented their place. "In the Edwardian era, Peter Pan started to be performed [in 1904], and that carried on for the next 25 years," points out Slattery Clark – enough time for several generations of children to learn to clap their hands to show they believe in fairies. Until 19 August the weather was unsuitable for photography. Because Frances and Elsie insisted that the fairies would not show themselves if others were watching, Elsie's mother was persuaded to visit her sister's for tea, leaving the girls alone. In her absence the girls took several photographs, two of which appeared to show fairies. In the first, Frances and the Leaping Fairy, Frances is shown in profile with a winged fairy close by her nose. The second, Fairy offering Posy of Harebells to Elsie, shows a fairy either hovering or tiptoeing on a branch, and offering Elsie a flower. Two days later the girls took the last picture, Fairies and Their Sun-Bath.
