Quentin Blake was born in 1932 and read English at Cambridge, before attending Chelsea Art College. He has won many major prizes for illustration, including the Kate Greenaway Medal (1980) and the Red House Children's Book Award (1981) for Mister Magnolia. He is also the winner of the Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration and in 1990 was voted 'The Illustrator's Illustrator' by Observer Magazine. A tireless promoter of children's literature – and a long-time collaborator with roald Dahl – Quentin Blake was awarded the OBE in 1988 and in 2005 he was awarded a CBE for services to Children's Literature. In the most recent New Year’s Honours list he has been knighted. Roald Dahl is now considered one of the most beloved storytellers of our time. Although he passed away in 1990, his popularity continues to increase as his fantastic novels, including James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, The BFG, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, delight an ever-growing legion of fans. urn:lcp:vicarofnibbleswi00dahl:epub:7b38561a-1037-44b1-961c-edfc5adcbd89 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier vicarofnibbleswi00dahl Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t2t44bv4z Isbn 0590033182 I adore Roald Dahl, especially when he's paired with Quentin Blake's illustrations. Two of my favorite people, together again! Look at all the exclamation points in this review! Excitement!

Quentin was the inaugural Children's Laureate (1999-2001), an experience he recorded in his book Laureate's Progress. During his time in the role, he celebrated children's books and children's book illustration with a range of projects and exhibitions, and conceived the idea for the House of Illustration, the world's first centre dedicated to the art of illustration in all its forms. She is a member of the parish and is befuddled by the sermons the Vicar gives. When she asks the Vicar how much alcohol one should entertain, he tells her that she must “pis, pis, pis’, instead of ‘sip, sip, sip’, which makes her think he is unfit for his role. This especially includes the church's most generous and perhaps the most kind parishioner called Miss Arabella Prewt, who detests being called "Mrs. Twerp." The trouble is, though, that he doesn't know that he is doing this and doesn't truly understand why his parishioners are so mad. After establishing himself as a writer for adults, Roald Dahl began writing children’s stories in 1960 while living in England with his family. His first stories were written as entertainment for his own children, to whom many of his books are dedicated. His first children's book was The Gremlins, about mischievous little creatures that were part of RAF folklore. The book was commissioned by Walt Disney for a film that was never made, and published in 1943. Dahl went on to create some of the best-loved children's stories of the 20th century, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda and James and the Giant Peach.

Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was born in Wales of Norwegian parents. He spent his childhood in England and, at age eighteen, went to work for the Shell Oil Company in Africa. When World War II broke out, he joined the Royal Air Force and became a fighter pilot. At the age of twenty-six he moved to Washington, D.C., and it was there he began to write. His first short story, which recounted his adventures in the war, was bought by The Saturday Evening Post, and so began a long and illustrious career.
