Description

When you read about depth gauge watches – either mechanical or quartz – you often read this, by the way (that they're not a substitute for a dive computer) and the reason is because dive computers do quite a lot that wristwatches don't. Being a modern-day Casio watch means there is no shortage of secondary features on offer here, including stopwatch, alarm, timer, dual-time, tide-graph and diving modes. Those familiar with the range will recognize the trademark asymmetrical style and the frog logo on the case back.

For the brand’s 35th anniversary, G-SHOCK is releasing a limited version of its beloved FROGMAN GWF-D1000 style. This is probably mostly due to the large amount of titanium used, as well as the lightweight rubber strap. To facilitate connecting the watch with your phone, Casio has the Edifice Connected app, which also has a phone finder feature, but sadly doesn’t have any in-app alarm alteration. Next to the highly functional watch, a diver’s knife is included in the set, branded with the G-SHOCK logo as well. While the original Frogman was a completely digital watch, Casio also now makes versions that feature full-analog displays, and the new G-Shock MR-G Frogman MRGBF1000R1A is of the later variety, with multi-function hands and sub-dials responsible for tracking all of its various operations. These cookies allow us to improve the functionality and experience of our site, these include third party cookies which collect information to help better tailor our advertising to your interests, preferences and past activity. It’s important to note that although this is a dive watch, it does not have a depth sensor, something the all-digital GWF-D1000 G-Shock Frogman watches have. It alleviates any momentary confusion one might have with a standard diving watch, figuring out which of the two hands is for minutes and then checking it against the bezel.

If the Frogman appeals but you don’t dive (not that it really matters), similar functionality is available on the G-Shock Mudmaster and the G-Shock Gravitymaster. An intricate combination of over 70 exterior components, the case includes an O-ring waterproof seal to deliver outstanding FROGMAN water resistance and special buffers to strengthen the shock-resistant structure. When you start the timer with a button press, that newly formed, single hand counts the minutes of dive time around the dial, making it very quick to see how long you have been submerged. The scuba-specific functions include the depth gauge, as well as the ability to track depth, record dive time and water temperature, and log data for up to 20 dives. Timeline display of time, date and number of dives along with smartphone-logged dive location and smartphone-shot photos.Lastly, although operating the watch is achieved by pressing the buttons on the side of its case, setting it requires you to unscrew the crown at 3 o’clock, which means that there is zero chance of accidentally disrupting its timekeeping by pressing any of the buttons. If your list says “dive” and “Bluetooth connection,” then you’ll be looking mostly at the G-Shock GWF-A1000 Frogman. That’s about to change with the EQB-1000D-1A, which crams tech we’ve seen in connected G-Shocks into a new, slimline case.

The GWF-D1000 also marks a first for the FROGMAN Series, with a water depth function that measures the depth down to 80 meters in 10-centimeter increments. I like the way you can press a button and the hands move out of the way so you can easily view the two subdials as well. The screw-lock case back, fit with sapphire crystal finished in gold vapor deposition, is engraved with the iconic FROGMAN diving frog character. Although the case is made entirely from titanium, metal bracelets aren’t really all that ideal for actual diving purposes, and so the new Casio G-Shock MR-G Frogman MRGBF1000R1A is fitted with a black rubber strap made from Dura Soft, which is a robust and comfortable fluoro rubber that feels both softer and more flexible than the standard resin straps fitted to most G-Shock models. The radio time sync would be of little use, but accuracy could be maintained by using the calendar and a homemade sundial to estimate mean solar noon and you could always re-set by that (accuracy would indeed eventually drift so far off as to be noticeable). Its unique asymmetrical design, screw-lock case back and distinctive diving frog character — which were so popular when FROGMAN came out back in 1993 — take the diver’s watch to a whole new level. Please bear in mind that I love the brand G shock(casio) dearly and I will recommend to all my friends. These and other features throughout the design keep the watch air-tight to ensure ISO 200-metre diving water resistance. Once you get back to the surface, a two-second hold of a button puts you in dive interval mode, which starts measuring your timing between dives; useful if you are going back underwater soon and need to do old-school deco calculations.
