Description

With considerable pressure after the incredible success and critical acclaim for The Lie Tree, Frances Hardinge managed to once again mesmerize readers with her unique and imaginative style of storytelling with her latest book A Skinful of Shadows. The spirit is wild, brutish and strong, but it may be her only defence in a time of dark suspicion and fear.

A Skinful of Shadows - Wikipedia

She takes some great decision many times but at others her naïve and honest self puts her in dangerous situation. If you were lucky, and if everyone thought you were tamed and trained … there might come a time when you could strike.

But I guess it does not matter because I enjoyed this book and never felt that it had some references from some other book. But the Fellmotes will not make it easy for them – for the two kids are needed for the very survival of their powerful household. Being brought up in a graveyard with no contact with the outside world and only ghosts as his caretakers, teachers and friends, it is fascinating to read the journey of Bod, the boy who grew up in a Graveyard. Makepeace, our main heroine, was an excellent character and her journey to maturity and peace is a difficult one for her but a terribly satisfying one for the reader. This author is already a restless maestro of fantasy fiction whose next book, whatever world it conjurs up, will be eagerly awaited by readers of all ages. The central themes of A Skinful of Shadows are inheritance and power, and how these link to governance both literal and psychological. Little idea-fragments grow in unattended parts of my brain, like dust bunnies, and eventually combine, like larger and more worrying dust bunnies. The text is set just before the English civil war, and follows the life of a young girl, Makepeace, who lived in a puritan community. At the centre of the novel, young Makepeace is a vital and engaging presence amid a cast of extraordinary and villainous characters, and she had my heart from the first. Makepeace's name is also a very common puritan style name as we are told that it represent 'making peace' with the community.
