Appreciate for the potpourri of Third World rhythms, which are handled so well; for the diversity of the music, which runs the gamut from Grace Jones-style club funk to reggae and rap; and, finally, for the literariness of Debbie Harry’s lyrics, which sketch a desolate, despoiled modern world driven by primitive passions. Orchid Club”, “Dragonfly” and “The Beast” are among the most interesting Blondie ever created, experimenting with hypnotic beats and unconventional song structures, hinting – along with “Fade Away and Radiate” from Parallel Lines – toward a parallel-world instance of Blondie as a trancey ambient-techno unit. In summary, this is an excellent album that suffered from a terrible album cover, poor lead off single, no number 1 pop songs, and a failed tour due to health problems. The band was a pioneer in the early American new wave and punk scenes of the mid- 70s, developing their sound in famous NYC clubs such as CBGBs. However, there is no denying that the songs on _The Hunter_ lack the punch and bite of earlier efforts.

The implication, I suppose, is that the pursuit of pleasure and excess finally overtakes the pursuer, and that you wind up lost on a spiral staircase of sensual diversion, left with only the diversion itself to contemplate. The summer Tracks Across America Tour '82 was set to promote the album but turned out to be unsuccessful.Though Harry’s pancultural heart is in the right place, her rap diction is about as convincing as, say, trying to imagine Dick Clark belting out “Soul Man. The trouble is, so intent is Blondie on making bold statements about contemporary malaise, and underscoring them with portentousness, that even on the most upbeat numbers you find that you’re reacting dispassionately (as in think, ponder, ruminate) as opposed to emotively (as in get up, dance, involve yourself). English Boys" is sweetly serene, and contains some of Debbie's most introspective lyrics about how the world was changing during her formative years. So Chris and Debbie took a gamble in prioritizing her solo career over the band and they lost badly.

Songs like "(Can I) Find the Right Words (To Say)" aren't particularly memorable, but the subject matter - that of tackling crossword puzzles - must be one of the most bizarre foundations for a Blondie song. I guess part of the reason why some people think this is the worst Blondie album ever is because it's so damn serious. Vote up content that is on-topic, within the rules/guidelines, and will likely stay relevant long-term. These remasters both included the 12'‘ extended version of War Child (incorrectly spelt “Warchild” on the 1994 release) as its only bonus track. Tracks on the album include Jimmy Destri's Motown pastiche "Danceway", while "Dragonfly" has a science-fiction theme to its lyrics about a race in space. It's not really a gem, but it's certainly underrated and also hugely diverse (the intense jungle rock of "Orchid Club," the sci-fi "Dragonfly," reggae of "Island of Lost Souls" and "Little Caesar," low-key jazz of the Smokey Robinson cover "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game"), which makes for an adventurous listen. The Hunter Gets Captured…”, while anticipating Debbie Harry’s future work as a jazz singer, rounds off the record nicely, flashing a light on its undercurrent themes of life as adventure / race / bush warfare.

I understand all the fuss and negative attention this album got over 30 years ago, but for me "The Hunter" is a thing of beauty (minus the hideous album cover). The album concludes with a cover version of Smokey Robinson's " The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game", originally recorded by the Marvelettes in 1967. For Your Eyes Only”: a cunning stylistic amalgam that could fit nicely among Parallel Lines’ reinventions of ’60s pop.
