As soon as the child started to play with the toys, the experimenter told the child that these were the experimenter’s very best toys and she had decided to reserve them for the other children. Stage 3: Test for Delayed Imitation Due to being a mechanical construction, Billy was able to move on his own. Most of the time, Jigsaw used video recordings of him to inform his victims about their situation. However, at times, Billy also appeared to the victims in person and occasionally rode an old red tricycle John had used in his childhood. ( Saw IV) Cumberbatch (1990) found that children who had not played with a Bobo Doll before were five times as likely to imitate the aggressive behavior than those who were familiar with it; he claims that the novelty value of the doll makes it more likely that children will imitate the behavior. All the children (including the control group) were subjected to “mild aggression arousal.” Each child was (separately) taken to a room with relatively attractive toys.

Billy with his Bowler Hat appears in Saw during Amanda's Reverse Beartrap tape for less than one second. It was then possible to match the children in each group so that they had similar levels of aggression in their everyday behavior. The experiment is, therefore, an example of a matched pairs design. In the Internet series Annoying Orange, Billy appears in "Annoying Saw" and "Annoying Saw 2: The Annoying Death Trap", both in which Orange refers to him as " Clownface", " Emo Clown", and " Donald Trump".Bandura, Ross, and Ross (1961) tested 36 boys and 36 girls from the Stanford University Nursery School aged between 3 to 6 years old.

Other behaviors that didn’t imitate that of the model were also recorded e.g., punching the Bobo doll on the nose.A further criticism of the study is that the demonstrations are measured almost immediately. With such snapshot studies, we cannot discover if such a single exposure can have long-term effects.

In an episode of The Simpsons, Bart takes his adopted brother to see a horror film with Billy the Puppet on screen stabbing someone with a chef knife. Several months later, Jigsaw used the puppet for the game of another victim, Michael Marks. When he awoke, a TV turned on, showing the puppet which revealed to him that he had a key planted behind his right eye which he had to cut out within 60 seconds. Otherwise a metal mask with numerous nails on the inside would close on his head and kill him. Unfortunately, Michael wasn't able to accomplish his task and died. When the corpse was found during an asbestos disposal, Detective Allison Kerry secured the video tape and took it to her office at the police station for further examination. ( Saw II) Experiments can be replicated. Standardized procedures and instructions were used, allowing for replicability. In fact, the study has been replicated with slight changes, such as using video, and similar results were found (Bandura, 1963). Later on, when William reached his fourth test, he was instructed by the puppet via video. Six of William's associates were chained to a rotating playground carousel which stopped periodically, resulting in one of the associates sitting in front of a mounted shotgun which would fatally shoot the victim in front of it, if William didn't make the choice to save the person. Reminding William of his dubious business practices, which had often resulted in the denial of health insurance applications, the puppet told him that he could only save two of his associates. ( Saw VI)again she suddenly saw herself on her TV screen. She realized that she was filmed from inside her closet and shot right through its door. When she searched the closet she found the camera and removed it but was then subdued by an invader with a Pig Mask who had sneaked up to her. Amanda Young and Detective Hoffman, who had become a Jigsaw apprentice on his own after the murder of Seth Baxter, abducted her and placed her in one of Jigsaw's traps. Children who observed the aggressive model made far more imitative aggressive responses than those who were in the non-aggressive or control groups. The researchers pre-tested the children for how aggressive they were by observing the children in the nursery and judged their aggressive behavior on four 5-point rating scales. Rapper Hopsin's album Raw depicts Hopsin on a tricycle with his face painted to look like Billy. The album's title itself can be interpreted as a spoof of the film's title.

Before the releases of Saw III and Saw IV, Billy was used in videos to promote the films on YouTube and MySpace. In the internet videogame series Inkagames, appear a character based on Billy called " Pigsaw", who is a recurring villain from the games.
